How to Travel Smart this Summer

How to Travel Smart this Summer

  • The tourism industry accounts for 8% of global carbon production
  • People are traveling farther and more frequently than ever before
You can take steps to minimize your impact by being an educated and conscientious consumer
  • Summer is the season for long days, warm temperatures and vacations.

However, summer travel can add up to a lot of pollution released into the atmosphere. A study last year found that between 2009 and 2013, global tourism’s carbon footprint ballooned from 3.9 to 4.5 billion tons of greenhouse gases. The current number accounts for 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than the construction industry, and four times higher than previous estimates.

Much of this growth is due to an increase in international travel. The carbon pollution comes from a myriad of sources, not the least of which are the airplanes themselves. Each 2,500 mile flight—a one-way flight between New York and Los Angeles—melts 32 square feet of Arctic ice.

Minimizing air travel is an excellent way to decrease your carbon footprint. However, car travel is often nearly as bad and not as feasible for long trips. Travel by ship can be three or four times more polluting than air travel.

Rather than not traveling at all, the best thing to do may be to travel conscientiously. Make each trip count, and make each decision after considering all options and details.

1. Travel less and make sure you maximize each trip.

2. Consider staycations or check out vacation destinations that are closer to home.

3. Take direct flights whenever possible.

4. Reduce your luggage to lower your effect on the airplane

5. Take mass transit, including trains and metros.

6. Ride a bike or walk, using zero-carbon transportation methods help minimize your carbon footprint.

8. Emphasize vegetables and eat lower on the food chain. Look for locally-sourced and sustainably-farmed options.

9. Invest in carbon offsets for your travel.
