Founder, President & CEO
A widely recognized entrepreneur and a respected leader in social impact, Tom Matzzie founded Ethical Electric in 2011 with the belief that everyone should have easy access to renewable wind and solar energy. Throughout his career, he’s developed powerful online communities designed to disrupt incumbents; he’s pioneered innovations now considered best practices in civic engagement; and he’s raised over $150 million for various cause-related donors and organizations.
Before starting Ethical Electric, Tom was a principal at Gladius Strategy LLC, the Washington director for MoveOn.org, an online mobilization director for the AFL-CIO, and a director of online organizing for the Democratic National Committee. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Tom was a finalist for the 2015 EY Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Greater Washington region. He was also named “a rising star” by The New York Times Magazine for his innovative work with MoveOn.org.
Chief Financial Officer
Jim is Chief Financial Officer of Ethical Electric. Jim has more than 20 years of experience with successful publicly-traded companies such as LightSquared/SkyTerra, MicroStrategy and Discovery as well as several startup businesses. Jim has participated in significant fund raising activities, including over $3 billion in complex financial instruments as well as successful M&A activities that include the take-private sale of SkyTerra at an enterprise value of $1.85 billion. He has directly supervised international businesses and finance teams in Europe, Canada, Asia and Latin America, and Jim’s experiences, including seven years with Arthur Andersen, allow him to be hands-on with respect to financial reporting and taxation. Jim has managed extensive ERP, FP&A and BI systems implementations leveraging these systems to provide timely and accurate metrics, insights and business intelligence to executive teams.
Chief Operating Officer
Chris is the Chief Operating Officer of Ethical Electric. Chris has deep experience in retail energy, and was most recently Vice President of Federal Relations at Direct Energy. There he represented both Direct Energy and parent company Centrica in advocating for energy efficiency and a price on carbon among other issues. Previously, Chris had responsibility for Direct Energy’s North American strategy on climate change where he managed Direct Energy’s practices and policies both internally and externally. Additionally, Chris held operations roles at Direct Energy, Constellation NewEnergy, and AES NewEnergy, where he helped build some of the largest energy retailers in the country. Chris started his career in energy as Director of Utilities for PepsiCo Restaurants where he negotiated some of the first retail electricity contracts as the California market opened.
Chief Marketing Officer
Tom is Chief Marketing Officer of Ethical Electric where he helps increase the number of people taking advantage of the company’s 100 percent renewable energy products. Over the course of his career, Tom has worked across a wide range of industries from telecom to financial to travel and tourism. Tom was Vice President of Marketing at Verizon where he helped launch Verizon’s bundle solutions for residential customers. And he worked at J. Walter Thompson and other advertising agencies where his programs were recognized by national advertising organizations and included in Advertising Age magazine's best TV commercials list.
Senior Vice President, New Ventures
Sandy is Senior Vice President, New Ventures at Ethical Electric, where he is responsible for launching new business lines. Prior to Ethical Electric, Sandy served as Chief Sales Officer at Direct Energy Solar, which acquired Astrum Solar in 2014. Sandy played a central role in bringing Astrum to #2 on Inc.500’s list of fastest growing companies, with over 23,000% growth over 3 years. Previously, Sandy was Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at FiberZone Networks, and General Manager of U.S. Investments for Portview Communication Partners. Sandy has lived overseas and worked as an advisor, investor, and executive in start-up technology companies on three continents.
Vice President, Corporate & Business Development & Co-founder
Richard leads investor and partner relations for Ethical Electric. Richard joined Ethical Electric as a veteran of clean energy entrepreneurship and mission-related investing. He served as Vice President, Project Finance for Mosaic, Online Organizer for the Webby nominated 17 million-person TckTckTck campaign, and as an angel investor in and founding advisor to startups such as Nextility, SparkFund, Faraday Bicycles, and SumofUs.org. He was a NextGen Fellow in Mission Related Investing and before graduating from Macalester College developed the first student-led Clean Energy Revolving Fund.
Vice President, Digital Marketing
Combining strategic thinking with e-commerce savvy, Jared Farber is responsible for all digital marketing, acquisition, and retention at Ethical Electric. Prior to joining the team, Jared was Director of Digital Marketing at The Washington Post, where he developed key strategies that led to dramatic growth in digital circulation and productive collaborations with Amazon. During his 15 years of industry experience, he also spearheaded digital marketing efforts for two successful startups (Repair.com and SeniorChecked) and tackled a range of e-commerce and marketing roles at AOL.
Vice President and Controller
Tory is the Vice President and Controller of Ethical Electric, where she is responsible for all the accounting, tax and financial reporting activities. She has over 20 years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, financial planning, business operations, and cash management. Prior to joining Ethical Electric, Tory held leadership positions at Aegis Defense Services, FPMI Solutions, Unisys, MicroStrategy and Anteon International Corporation. She began her career in public accounting at large regional public accounting firms.
Vice President, Data Services
Daniel is Vice President, Data Services at Ethical Electric where he is responsible for data management, architecture, modeling and infrastructure. Prior to joining the company, Daniel served as the Finance Data Manager for President Obama's re-election campaign. He has worked on dozens of political campaigns around the U.S. bridging the gap between technology and politics, and he is an experienced leader of data professional teams.
Paul St. Louis
Vice President, Operations
Paul is Vice President, Operations of Ethical Electric. Paul is an expert in operations for competitive energy companies, and prior to joining Ethical Electric, he spent over 20 years in the energy industry, holding leadership positions with companies including Hess, Sunoco, Southern Company, and Direct Energy. Paul has spent the last several years developing solutions for commercial and residential customers in deregulated energy markets across the US and Canada.
